How to transfer gas liters to cubic meter

The cubic meter is considered standard unit of measure of volume. However in life also smaller stand-alone unit – liter is often used. Knowing substance volume in liters, it is easy to transfer it to cubic meters and vice versa. But at measurement of volume of gas, liters are usually used for liquefied gas, and cubic meters – for usual (main).

1. To transfer gas liters to cubic meters, divide the number of liters for 1000. For transfer of cubic meters of gas to liters use the return rule: increase the number of cubic meters of gas for 1000. In the form of formulas these simple rules can be written down in the following look: Km³ = C / 1000, C = Km³ * 1000, where: Km³ - the number of cubic meters, and C – the number of liters.

2. As a rule, volume liquefied (being under big pressure or at a low temperature) the gas concluded in various tanks (cylinders) is measured in liters. Gas volume is usually measured in cubic meters at atmospheric (or small) pressure. To transfer liters of liquefied gas to cubic meters of usual gas it is necessary to know its chemical composition, pressure, temperature or density and weight except the number of liters. At the same time it is necessary to consider that cylinders, as a rule, are filled with liquefied gas no more than for 80%. For approximate calculations it is possible to accept the following fact: at evaporation of one liter of liquefied gas (propane) 200 liters of gaseous are formed. I.e. for the translation of amount of liquefied gas in liters in cubic meters use the following formula: Km³ = C / 5gde C – the number of liters of liquefied gas.

3. Example. What consumption of gas will show the household gas meter if through it to pass a standard cylinder of household gas? Decision. The standard "propane" gas cylinder has the volume of 50 liters. Household (kitchen) gas consists of butane. Standard gas station contains 21 kg of such gas mix. As the molar mass of propane and butane – different, and the ratio of amount of gases is usually unknown, having used the above-stated formula, we will receive: Km³ = 50/5=10 cubic meters.

4. For compressed gases (do not confuse with liquefied) use the following approximate formula: Km³ = C * D / 1000, where D – gas pressure in the atmospheres.

5. Example. What volume of oxygen contains in a standard cylinder with a pressure of 250 atmospheres? Decision. As nitrogen, argon, oxygen are applied to storage of such gases 40-liter cylinders. Therefore, oxygen volume with a normal (atmospheric) pressure will be: Km³ = 40 * 250/1000 = 10 cubic meters.
