How to translate geographical coordinates

How to translate geographical coordinates

Coordinates of an object can be written down in several types: in degrees, minutes and seconds (ancient way), in degrees and minutes with decimal fraction and also in degrees with decimal fraction (modern option). Today all three methods are used, creating need of the translation of geographical coordinates from one system in another.

It is required to you

  • - coordinates in one of record forms;
  • - calculator;
  • - program for the translation and computer.

Instruction

1. If you were given coordinates in degrees with decimal fraction, transfer them to degrees and minutes. At first count width. For this purpose rewrite number before a comma or a point, it will be the number of degrees. Then transfer a fractional part to degrees: increase it by 60. The received number will also be minutes of your width. Do the same operation with point longitude. Write down the received coordinates in the form of 12 °45.32N, 31 °51.06'E.

2. The same coordinates can be transferred to degrees with minutes and seconds. The integer of degrees at the same time remains to the same. At first count the number of minutes, for this purpose increase number after a comma by 60. Rewrite the whole part of the received result, and with fractional do the same operation – increase it by 60. As a result you receive value of degrees, minutes and seconds with a fractional part. Write down the received result in the form of 22 °15'20.9916 of "" N, 17 °35'3.6338 "" of E.

3. If you, on the contrary, need to transform coordinates from degrees to decimal fraction, arrive as follows. Divide the minutes specified in the form of decimal fraction into 60, as a result at you a fractional part of number of degrees will turn out. Write down result in the form of 55.755831 °, 37.617673 °.

4. To turn coordinates with minutes and seconds into decimal, act this way. Begin with the end: at first translate seconds in minutes, having divided their value into 60. Write down the received result in the form of the degrees and minutes specified with decimal fraction. Then transfer minutes to degrees, having also divided them into 60. As a result you receive required value of coordinates in degrees.

5. If you need to transfer coordinates from one system to another rather often, use special programs, they can be downloaded on the computer or to use online.
