The largest stars in the galaxy

The largest stars in the galaxy

Until recently the biggest star in the galaxy of the Milky Way was known: by right the Garnet star of Gershel from the constellation of Cassiopeia had this title. But recently three more were found.

Instruction

1. In the course of studying 74 red supergiants, three of them surpassed the previous champion by the sizes a little. Now as champions are considered KW star from the constellation of the Sagittarius, V354 from Tsefey's constellation and KY from the Cygnus constellation. Each of these stars separately surpasses by the sizes the Sun in one and a half thousand times. For an example - their size approximately in 7-8 times more orbits of Earth rotating around the Sun. The distance dividing the Sun and these stars is approximately equal to 10 thousand light years. These stars, despite of the sizes, the most massive in the galaxy are not. Their weight equals to about 25 solar masses, and there are stars which weight is equal to 150 solar masses and more.

2. Scientists allow the fact that the red supergiant VV which is in Tsefey's constellation can be larger than these stars, but under the influence of gravitation of the accompanying planet it is strongly deformed that complicates the exact answer to a question.

3. In July, 2013 the scientists managed to observe from beginning to end process of the birth of the star exceeding the mass of the Sun by 500 times and radiating light in several million times is brighter. By means of powerful telescopes the scientists considered the birth moment in all details. The huge cloud of dust and gases in the course of childbirth under the influence of gravitation was pulled together inside, forming a new star. Beginning observation of this part of the galaxy, nobody could predict similar result: expected emergence of a star which will exceed the Sun by the size in one hundred times. There was it in the constellation of the Square, remote from Earth on 10 thousand light years. Such titans are a rarity, and it is almost impossible to find the moment of their birth. Formation in these stars happens very quickly in connection with their sizes, and young the star remains very not for long.

4. The big and the brightest of the known stars can call also VY of the Big Dog which is unique in many parameters. Stars of such size most often enter several star systems, but it is a single star. Diameter of this hyper giant is about 3 billion km. For an example if to place VY of the Big Dog in the center of the solar system instead of the Sun, it will occupy itself(himself) space up to an orbit of Saturn. Radiation of a star occurs in infrared light, and about its properties the scientists did not come to a consensus yet. There are theories that it is big red hyper giant and also that it is a supergiant, only very big. VY of the Big Dog approximately in 4500 light years from Earth is located, and the state says it that it, as well as any supernew, can blow up at any time. Its burning-down kernel almost completely burned out a reserve of hydrogen and helium and consists generally of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. The active emission of substances preceding explosion, a star already began.
