What are types of phrases

Some school students and not only school students, confuse a simple sentence with a phrase. To define a phrase, it is necessary to know what they are and also their main signs.

The phrase is several words which are connected among themselves to sense. A phrase is not the combination of a subject and a predicate, phraseological units, compound forms of words and transfer as there is no main word and from it dependent or dependent here. Between all words in a phrase there is a communication, whether it be on a case, a sort or other sign.

Phrases on structure

On the structure the phrases are simple and difficult. It is clear, that simple are the two words interconnected among themselves where one word main, and another – from it dependent. Difficult phrases can consist of three or more words and also to consist of several simple phrases.

Types of phrases

Phrases can be subdivided into nominal, verbal and adverbial. It directly depends on as what part of speech the main word acts. A personalized phrase call where the main word acts as a noun, either an adjective, or a pronoun, or a numeral. Examples of personalized phrases: With the main noun: dark night, green grass, odorous flowers. With the main adjective: necessary for work, important for me. With the main numeral: ten balls, four boys, seven kids. With the main pronoun: someone beautiful, somebody from below. The second type of phrases are verbal. Here the main word can be a verb, a participle or an adverbial participle. Examples of verbal phrases: Where main word verb: I will go to eat, we will float to the coast, we will run on a stop. Where main word participle: the run kilometer flown the half-world. Where main word adverbial participle: putting on a suit, braiding braids, sitting on a sofa. If in a phrase the main word acts as an adverb, so it and is called – adverbial (quite successful, still beautifully, to the right of the river, shortly before the trip). Also phrases divide into free and not free. If in a free phrase the components can exist the friend without friend (to welcome mom), then in not free it is excluded. Divide phrases into types and on the nature of the established semantic relations. So, phrases happen: - attributive (deep lake, good mood, beautiful nature); - objective (to vacuum the carpet which wrote the letter, digging a hole); - adverbial (it is excellent to take a walk, speak loudly, deeply to dive).
