Symbol history
History of the birth of the sign "Wind rose" goes far to depth of centuries. Initially it was a symbol of a navigation star at seamen. In the northern hemisphere such fixed star in a night sky is the Pole star. Sailors for a long time learned to determine the latitude of the place by it and to approximately define the location in the sea. Wind was the second reference point for experienced seafarers. Many sea winds are constant during certain periods of season, and, knowing these regularities, the captain adjusted the course and unmistakably brought the ship from a long voyage into the native harbor. So the symbol of a navigation star gained additional value, and star beams began to indicate parts of the world: North, South, East and West. The sign of the Wind rose which is pricked out on a shoulder was a peculiar amulet for sailors. It gave them confidence in correctness of a route and successful return to the home ground. Today it the tattoo is more symbol of search of a way – a guiding star. Intermediate points specify the northeast, the southeast, the northwest and the southwest, their beams in an eight-pointed wind rose is shorter.
