Where grew up an eye retina from stem cells

The group of the Japanese scientists managed to receive the simple fragment of a retina of an eye showing nevertheless complex structure in the form of an eye glass. Such technology of cultivation from stem embryonic cells can be useful in researches and in the long term – in therapy.

The Center of biology of development which is located in the city of Kobe with assistance of chemical corporation "Kemikat Sumitomo" participated in an experiment on cultivation of a multilayered retina of an eye of the person from stem cells. Results of work of researchers under the leadership of Yoshiki Sasai are published in the Cell Stem Cell magazine.

During the research by scientists it was established that embryonic stem cells of the person can form an eye glass, that is intermediate structure which at development of a germ forms an eye retina. The eye glass which was formed of stem cells consisted of two layers.

One of layers of the received fabric contained a large number of photosensitive cages: flasks and sticks. As at damage and a degeneration of a retina there is first of all a destruction of these cages, similar fabric is capable to become fine material for transplantation. The eye glass made from embryonic stem cells of mice was much less, than the grown-up Esiki Sasai and colleagues from human stem cells. Authors of study believe that stem cells of an embryo store the "internal instructions" allowing to be differentiated in retina prototype cages. "Our work allows to understand better how there is a development of an eye in a human embryo and also opens a new way of development of regenerative medicine", - Sasai says. Though opening can also render irreplaceable service in medicine, scientists did not solve a problem of connection of the received retina and optic nerve yet. For restoration of eye fabrics stem klutka of adults are used too. The Australian scientists managed to grow up population of stem cells on contact lenses. This invention was worked for regeneration of a cornea of eyes at patients.
