1. At first sight, Chichikov – pleasant in communication, the polite and well-mannered person not capable on any reprehensible, disgraceful act. 2. Having learned that at the rich landowner Plyushkin who on an old age of years went mad and became painfully avaricious, serfs for hunger "as flies die", Chichikov cannot hide the delight. And does not come to its mind to sympathize with the unfortunate people who became the victims of the petty tyrant owner. Even other landowners (for example, Sobakevich) sharply condemn Plyushkin. And Chichikov sees only benefit, he had chance to buy the true wealth for symbolical money! So only the heartless and unscrupulous person can behave.
3. In that part of the book which is devoted to young years and Chichikov's service at different positions the developed picture of moral degradation of this person is given. Servility before the administration, greed, money-making, embezzlement of public funds, readiness at any time to make a disgraceful act, for example to betray the former benefactor or to pretend to be in love with the ugly girl if it is favorable to it, - such is Pavel Ivanovich's behavior.
4. To stand well with the administration, to promote, scare together to itself a fortune, it does not shun literally nothing. And the conscience does not torment him. Others take bribes – why not to take him? Others dip a hand into a state pocket – why to it to be honest? There is such moral position.
5. It is no wonder that Chichikov as a result conceived to commit swindle with "dead souls". It could come to mind to only absolutely unscrupulous, heartless person.
