In a conversation at a table the grandmother was surprised that the uncle Egor brought them bread, at it was five children. It one worked in collective farm, and it got bread hard. The uncle Egor explained that he was given grain for workdays, and he is glad to share bread with relatives who need the help. Especially he felt sorry for the boy without father who could take care of it. It touched with these words the most sick string in the boy's heart.
The author of the story writes that he took offense and even began to hate it for these words. Decided to touch the uncle Egor too and to put him in an awkward situation. He noticed that he from the uncle strongly smells then and manure, and told it about it. It became unpleasant to the uncle, he tried to justify himself that hurried to bring bread and did not manage to descend in a bath.
It became a shame to Mame and the grandmother with the boy. They explained to him that he showed ingratitude to the uncle Egor. He took care of them, shared with them bread. The grandmother was upset, told that she incorrectly brought up the grandson.
The author of the story felt guilty, understood that he made an awful act and decided to apologize. The uncle lived behind a ravine, at the cemetery, and the boy was afraid to go one. On the street it was dark and cold. But words of the grandmother: "Itself nabedit – itself and correct …" forced it to overcome fear. He went to apologize to the uncle.
Heart of the boy faded with fear, in the head words sounded that it dishonored all: mother, father, grandfather and grandmother. But he sobbed and went. He understood that it is necessary to implore for forgiveness at the uncle Egor, tomorrow will be late, the uncle will leave. At the house of the uncle the boy stammering, shouted: "Uncle Egor! Forgive me!" The author writes that at that moment he felt deep repentance for the act. Later they made friends with the uncle Egor. But, remembering this case, the author again and again tests fault before the person who disinterestedly shared with it the most valuable – bread.

Often warm attitude towards people is brought up by life. People who had feeling of uselessness and loneliness often notice it and in others. So it happened also to the hero of the story Grigory. In the spring he liked to go by Don on fishing.
During war Grigory remained an orphan, lived in orphanage. He always regretted that it has no relatives. The man even dreamed of how he will arrive to the family with gifts.
Once Grigory together with companions made a business trip and saw the old woman who hardly dug a kitchen garden. Surprised the man that the old woman digs a kitchen garden with a great effort. He saw her tortures. When Grigory suggested the companion to help the aunt Varya to plant potato, that willingly agreed. Grigory could not look as this woman suffers. He saw that this work brings her suffering. When they came to the woman, that was frightened and told that she has nothing to pay for work. Then the hostess long thanked them and when saw off, cried. These tears to Grigory were remembered. Then he several times came to help to it about the house.
When there came the spring, Grigory worried not on fishing. He thought of a meeting with the aunt Varya. The man was surprised to the state, grinned over himself, but could do nothing with himself. When he thought of future meeting, to him it was good.
The neighbor of the aunt Varya asked it for what such happiness dropped out it that god sent it such golden person.
Then Grigory, it seems, also forgot about the far settlement and the old woman. But there came the spring, and it again to him was remembered and did not leave the head. He represented again how it with the last bit of strength digs the earth. It seemed to him that it will fall now. How it toiled, Grigory could not forget in any way. The voice of reason hinted him that there is a lot of such people, but heart he felt that he will not throw it, will arrive and will help. The bitter childhood and the fact that on its way after all sympathetic people who took care met was the reason of manifestation of care, responsiveness, probably. It was happy when the young seaman carried them to circus, and the controller the aunt Katya treated him with pies. Childhood memories helped it to decide on the decision – to go to the aunt Varya. He wanted the old person that she was happy to have no bitter days.
He did not tell about a trip even to members of the family. Why he acted this way? As to tell about it … And why to tell … It is necessary just to help the old person … Grigory made the moral choice – helped the weak woman and continued to help. Even the fact that it kept secretly from relatives the desire and that did not tell the aunt Varya the true reason of arrival does not belittle highly moral value of his behavior.
The man who passed through the heavy childhood kept in himself feeling of empathy, kept desire to help another. Care of the old lonely woman became requirement of his soul. Without it he could not live any more. It became its moral tradition. And he dreamed to transfer this tradition to the son that that never was cruel, and grew up the warm-hearted, careful person.
