How to improve a lexicon?
Each person owns active and passive lexicon. Active are those words which are used in our daily speech. Words which we know and understand belong to passive lexicon, but we do not apply in a conversation. To understand how to increase a lexicon, it is necessary to pay first of all attention to development of active lexicon. For this purpose it is necessary not to be lazy and do some exercises.
- Take the small text on volume, read it, and then rewrite it on memory. Compare initial material and the retelling. Pay attention to those words which you did not use. If they are known to you – means, enter a passive stock. If is not present – it is necessary to learn their value and to remember. However you should not learn words according to the list. Thus, they will not remain in memory for a long time and will not pass into the speech. Trying to remember a new word, it is necessary to make several offers with it, representing the corresponding vital event.
- Take any text and change it, replacing with synonyms as much as possible words, but so that the sense remained the same. Do several options.
- Choose several dozen words which are not used in your speech and make the coherent text which they will enter. After that try to present the composed events.
- Take the book and choose in it a word which you know, but you do not apply in the speech. Thumb through the book from beginning to end, selecting all offers in which there is this word and pronounce them aloud.
How to enrich a lexicon?
The main means of increase in a lexicon is reading. Whenever possible try to read as much as possible various literature. Pronounce aloud interesting phrases and turns. It is useful to repeat dialogues of characters.
Pay attention to proverbs and sayings. Write down in what words, new to you, meet. Think up in what situations in life they can be applied. If such opportunity is presented, use new expression.
