Syndrome of the hostage

Syndrome of the hostage

Syndrome of the hostage, or as it is called still, "The Stockholm syndrome", this psychological state of the person which results from capture it in hostages and long contact with the aggressors. In case of this syndrome, hostages begin to sympathize with bandits, and sometimes even to identify themselves with them.

Syndrome of the hostage in psychology

The psychological feature of this syndrome is that the person is in complete moral and physical dependence from the person who captured him therefore begins to make some actions in his advantage. In the history there are even several cases when the aggressor was together with the victims for long years. And after the victim was released, it began to justify actions of the offender.

Syndrome of the thief and hostage

To explain an etiology of this syndrome in terms of psychology rather difficult. It is much simpler to make it, taking human factors in attention. The thief and the hostage can make friends if between them there was a certain emotional contact. For example, the aggressor did not want to kill the victim, though was able to do it at any time. Or made any concessions for this purpose not to do to the hostage harm.

Syndrome of the hostage in family

Unfortunately, there are cases when the syndrome of the hostage arises in family. The most widespread example of such "family" syndrome are cases when the wife does not leave the husband even if that beats her. In that case the hostage just adapts to the aggressor, and does not imagine other life. Moreover, beaten women rather often even justify actions of the husbands. And the most popular reasons why they refuse a divorce, are:

  • financial problems;
  • presence of children;
  • shame;
  • housing problems.

But, actually, these reasons are not justification, and the most strong indications of approach of a syndrome of the hostage. It also is the first call to the fact that the victim needs the help of the true expert who will help to understand a problem and to turn a situation to the correct course.
