The wedding, as well as the majority of the solemn and concerning events, is followed by the mass of superstitions. It agrees to one of them, it is not recommended to marry in May: in family life there will be no happiness. However if this belief exists for a long time, it has to have a reasonable explanation.
The popular wisdom says: "In May to marry – all life to toil". It warns future spouses about troubles which by all means will follow if to contract marriage in May, hinting at origin of the name of month from the words "toil", "drudgery". In fact names of months have Latin roots, and the last spring month bears a name of the patroness of the fertile earth Maya – heroines of antique legends and legends therefore and in many European languages of the romano-German group sounds probably: in English – may, in Italian – maggio, in Spanish - mayo. More rational explanation for proverbs and sayings "I am glad May does not order to marry and", "Kind people in May do not marry", "In May to marry – to say goodbye to health", etc. it is possible to find that for May the most busy season of spring sowing had, and and responsibility of each of peasants future harvest, stocks for the winter and how there will pass the whole year till next spring depended on diligence. Therefore during field works it was not accepted to play the weddings which were followed by long festivities. In terms of astrology, the location of planets and connection of the Sun with scattered star clusters which is observed in May does not favor to creation of family. At the same time this science considers the vital phenomena individually taking into account many factors therefore for some couples the May can quite appear most suitable month for marriage. In public consciousness the belief that a marriage in May – a right way to unfaithfulness to other family troubles and a divorce strongly took roots. Even if the groom and the bride are far from similar prejudices, there will always be well-wishers who will categorically advise against to marry in a month such bad reputation. And if future spouses trust in a sign, then it is really better for them to choose other time for a wedding: in subconsciousness there will live the thought that the May union is doomed, and any quarrel will be perceived as the next confirmation of popular wisdom. At the same time in terms of religion of superstition is a sin, and it is not necessary to pay attention to them. By the way, the orthodox church does not forbid to marry in May, except cases when the Lent is the share of it, but after its end blesses and crowns marriages. May is time when the nature is filled with violence of paints and aromas: trees blossom, tulips blossom, the lilac smells sweet, birds cheerfully chirp, the sun does not bake yet, and tenderly heats – everything creates the atmosphere of love and happiness around. If to reject signs aside and to celebrate a wedding in one of such magic days, this holiday will repeat from year to year, actually marriages consist in heaven, and has no value when they are made on the earth.
