1. Smooth run is the type of run which demands either manifestation of speed, or manifestation of high-speed or special endurance. There is still the run on superlong distances (15; 21.0975; 42.195; 100 km) and ultralong distances (daily run) which runnings take place not in the arena, and on the highway or stadium. Distances of 1000 and 1300 miles are considered as the longest distances of continuous run.

2. Hurdling represents track and field athletics sport at which on sprint runnings the athletes need to break barriers. Runnings are held at distances 50, 60, 100 (at men 110) and 400 m. The quantity of barriers depending on the distance increases from 4 to 10.

3. Often run with the barrier is confused with obstacle race. Obstacle race or steeplechase represents performance of some elements: run between obstacles and overcoming obstacles. As obstacles barriers and the hole with water are presented. All barriers are fixed and intended for all, i.e. unlike run with barriers the athlete won't manage to overturn them. It is necessary to distribute competently forces at the distance and depending on preparation to choose how to overcome obstacles: concerning the barrier or jumping over it. Also competitions at distances of 4х200 m, 4х800 m, 4х1500 m are held.

5. Cross run is carried out in the park and forest zone. It is the type of cross-country run which demands endurance and agility. Distances are possible: at women - 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 km, at men - 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 12 km.
