It gives the chance to the visitor for light day to get acquainted with life and elements of life of the Ukrainian people during 17-20 of centuries. Exhibits are presented in an unusual foreshortening — under the open sky. Pavilions completely are absent, expositions of various ethnographic regions of Ukraine are in a natural zone.
The museum is founded in 1969 and located in the settlement of Pirogovo in the suburb of Kiev. Opening of the museum was promoted by activization of the public and the publication in 1965 of the document The Letter on Creation of the Museum of National Culture in Kiev. It accelerated opening of the museum. Specialists ethnographers developed the special program. The staff of the museum carried out the forwarding work aimed at finding architectural and household funds to short terms. Thanks to their efforts the museum opened in 1976. Thirty years it worked and continued to collect a unique collection of exhibits which is presented by two hundred constructions typical for the historic areas of the country.
Almost all constructions original are also constructed by Ukrainians of that era. Some buildings are recreated according to descriptions. The museum stretches for 150 hectares therefore it is desirable to come to Pirogovo not for one hour to manage to visit all ethnographic zones. It is the South of Ukraine, the Central Dnieper Bank, Podolia, Poltavshchyna, Slobozhanshchina, Polesia, the Carpathians, Mills, the Exhibition field, Mills and the Modern village.
The dwelling of the ordinary Ukrainian peasant always was the work of wooden architecture. It was accepted to call the house of continuous use a hut, and temporary, seasonal structures huts, kolyba. For peasants constructions of economic appointment were great value: stable, hen house, shed, also cellars and sheds. Well crane remains especially interesting construction still. As construction material used a tree in the form of a felling, a bar, a basis with filling (brushwood, clay about sexual). Generally used a linden, and covered a roof with straw or a cane, small plates — shingle. The old village contains remarkable copies of public buildings — church, school, tavern. Mills water and wind provided peasants with inexpensive and available energy. In internal planning of the dwelling a specific place was held by the furnace on which diagonal the ceremonial corner with icons, vyshivanka and an icon lamp was located. Under icons traditionally put a table, sometimes instead of a table a chest.

The single hut of 1587 in which the use of the sixteenth century is recreated is considered the oldest construction of the museum. The Saint church of the Great martyr Paraskev is known also outside the museum as the work of an era of baroque.
