To answer this question, it is necessary to make small digression to a century before last. In 1886 one druggist living in Atlanta, experimenting with components for new medicine, I created drink which was called Coca-Cola subsequently.
The extract from leaves of a cocaine leaf of which did the cocaine used for the medical purposes was a part of Coca-Cola in those old times. The second ingredient of drink is an extract of fruits of a nut tree which was called Coca. In the 19th century, cocaine was used not only as medication, powder added it to many soft drinks to add to it the toning properties.
Naturally, almost for one and a half centuries the structure of Coca-Cola changed, but some components remained the same.
Until recently the structure of Coca-Cola was strictly secret, but now the complete list of ingredients is published.
So, what is a part of Coca-Cola?
- liquid extract of a cocaine leaf, this ingredient remained since those old times;
- caffeine which has the invigorating and stimulating properties. Very few people know that 500 ml the small bottle of Coca provides an organism with three-day norm of caffeine;
- citric acid. It is a natural preservative which provides long-term storage of drink, by the way, and many other food too;
- juice of a lime is a relative of a lemon habitual to us;
- caramel which is received at long heating of sugar. Caramel forms unusual taste of drink;
- carbon dioxide is that substance which does drink aerated;
In principle, habitual structure of any drink, and here components more interestingly will go further:
- orthophosphoric acid which influences tooth enamel, provoking its destruction;
- various sweeteners, such, as цикламат and its derivatives, aspartame and some other which harm is proved long ago;
- E 211 additive, that is sodium benzoate. In general sodium benzoate - it antimycotic and antibacterial means why it is added to drink - not absolutely clear, but, nevertheless, it is present at Coca-Cola;
- a carmine - dye which gives to drink its brown and caramel shade. The carmine is completely natural, and here receive it from the dried-up and crushed insects and if to be absolutely exact, then from females of the cochineal insect. Perhaps, it is one of the few natural components in Coca-Cola.
