The Damask steel – the many-sided, elastic, solid, strong and durable material allowing to achieve to smiths of improbable effects and to realize even the most refined desires at production of a blade or knife. How to make the Damask steel independently and what should be known at the same time?

Instruction

1. Prepare to bake in which it is necessary to maintain temperature to 1200 degrees. For this business it is possible to put independently the small oven from a stone. All procedure will not take away a lot of time, and it will be possible to use such furnace for many years if process of production of the Damask steel and blades of it will entice you.

2. Prepare iron ore and usual wood coal. Take a stone horn. Mix iron ore and charcoal, place materials in a stone horn and heat to temperature not less than 1100-1200 degrees. Iron ore at such heating will be exempted from oxygen and to be restored, and as a result of the introduction in reaction of iron with charcoal spongy homogeneous mass will be formed.

3. Extract the received iron from the furnace and let's cool down. Squeeze out of the received spongy iron all impurity by forging. As a result of the carried-out actions at you the small piece of welding iron, carbon content in which very low, has to turn out. Prepare the clay capacity in which it would be possible to heat the received pieces of iron, heating in the closed clay crucible will be a great option.

4. Put pieces of iron and charcoal in a clay crucible and close it, such heating will allow to prevent secondary oxidation of iron.

5. Wait for the squelching sound, it will demonstrate that iron is melted.

6. Cool a crucible, it is necessary to do it gradually, slowly, having just left in the cooled-down furnace for indefinite time. Take the turned-out ingot.

7. Make a blade of the received material (ingot). For this purpose heat an ingot to temperature not less than 650 degrees (steel will become plastic) and make forging then, having achieved desirable result, quickly cool the received blade in water or a brine to temper it.
