Quite often same word can have absolutely different values: generally it happens because of use of the terminology borrowed from Latin. In particular, the word "sublimation" formed from two roots — "under" can serve as an example of it and "to bear".

1. In physics sublimation is called process of transition of substance of a firm state in gaseous at once (passing an intermediate, liquid phase). At the same time some energy is transferred to substance, and transition is followed by change of specific volume. As example: transfer to a piece of ice of such amount of heat that it began to evaporate at once, without turning into water. Desublimation, in turn, the return process — for example, emergence of hoarfrost on branches of trees. Ice is formed of steam at once, without passing through liquid state.
2. Also sublimation is the way of the press in polygraphy and technology of drainage of products in the food industry.
3. The greatest popularity was gained by sublimation in terms of psychology. It is possible to call conditional it social adaptation or suppression of desires. If any need of the specific individual is beyond social norms, the subconsciousness finds a different way to be exempted from excess emotions. For example, pronounced sexual desire during flirtation takes a form of prearranged signals: corrections of clothes, a game with earrings or a ring on a finger.
4. Not only momentary emotions, but also the saved-up feelings in general can sublimate. Z. Freud considered this process as "creative" protection: so, the individual can send dissatisfaction with own private life to creativity; the rage which is saved up for the administration can be vented in gym; internal complexes can be compensated by external luxury.
5. Sublimation is never disposal of the internal conflict. It — only a part of the mechanism of social adaptation and therefore is a solution only so, the found analog is how close to the main desire. For example, the suppressed sadism can be completely replaced with surgery since both processes are close each other. On the other hand, physical activities will never be able to replace completely lack of private life therefore also the individual will not be able to replace long time with one another.
