The school Olympic Games on mathematics are an action special and demanding from its participant of the corresponding intellectual and moral preparation as for the allowed short time it is necessary to concentrate, cope as much as possible with himself and to solve difficult problems which were prepared by organizers of the Olympic Games. Therefore it is important to know about several useful rules, following to which will allow the test pupil to spend most effectively 4-5 hours at the Olympic Games and it is essential to increase probabilities of success in the solution of tasks. The following advice will help all participants of a mathematical competition.
- Attentively read conditions of problems of the Olympic Games and be defined in what order you will solve them. It should be taken into account that usually the difficulty of tasks gradually increases from the first task to the last.
- If the condition, in your opinion, can be understood in various ways, then it is not necessary to choose the most convenient for himself, and it is better to ask the person on duty a question for explanation of a situation.
- If the solution of a task passed too easily – it is suspicious, most likely, you somewhere were mistaken or incorrectly understood a statement of the problem.
- If the task does not give in to the decision – try it to simplify somehow (to take other numbers, to consider special cases, etc.) or to work out it by method "by contradiction", or to replace numbers with letters, etc.
- If not clearly there are also doubts whether some statement is right, try it serially to prove, to disprove (so advised to arrive the largest Soviet mathematician A.N. Kolmogorov).
- You should not be obsessed with one task very long: sometimes leave it and estimate situation. If there is though slightest progress, then it is possible to continue the decision and if the thought constantly moves around, then it is better to postpone reflections over a task (at least for some time).
- If fatigue begins to seize you, distract for several minutes (have a look at clouds or have just a rest) and with new forces start the decision.
- Having finally solved a task, begin to make out the decision at once. Thus you will check its correctness and switch to other tasks.
- Each step of the solution of a task should be formulated even if it seems simple and obvious. Also the decision can be written down in the form of several statements (lemmas). It will help further during the checking and discussion of the performed work.
- Re-read finally work before handing over it, "eyes checking" – whether they will be able properly to understand it?
