How to calculate an azimuth

Knowledge Base Hits: 78

At explaining the ground very often it is necessary to make the movement on the directions set in advance, but not on sides of the horizon. How with it we can be helped by a compass? The movement in the chosen direction requires ability to calculate an azimuth, that is the size characterizing a corner between the direction on the North and the direction on the chosen reference point.

It is required to you

Instruction

1. Imagine that you stand in the center of a circle which is divided into 360 equal parts, and the zero mark specifies in the northern direction. Other strokes will be respectively directed from a point of your stay in different directions.

2. Using the counting put about each stroke you can point the direction to any object chosen as a reference point on the area. Let's say that the support of a power line is located opposite to a stroke with counting 270. It will mean that this object is located from us in the direction which is defined by this counting. is called an azimuth.

3. For definition of an azimuth pick up a compass, release a brake of a magnetic needle. Give to a compass strictly horizontal position. After the arrow stops fluctuating and will calm down, combine zero division of a circular scale with the end of an arrow which points north. Just you made orientation of a compass.

4. Now it is careful not to bring down orientation of a compass, turn its cover so that the front sight was directed towards the chosen reference point, and a cut – in your party. For this purpose it is necessary to look through a cut and a front sight at a reference point. You watch at the same time that the end of an arrow was combined with zero division all the time. The counting located opposite to the index (near a front sight) will be numerical expression of an azimuth on this reference point.

5. If you are faced by the return problem, that is finding of the necessary direction of the known azimuth, then establish the index at a front sight on counting equal to the set azimuth (for example, 300 degrees). Now establish a compass horizontally and focus on the North in the way described above. Accurately, trying not to bring down orientation, look at the area through a cut and a front sight. On this line choose some reference point. The direction from your point of standing on a reference point will correspond to this azimuth.
