1. At first check whether the compass correctly works. For this purpose take a steel subject (it can be keys, scissors, etc.). Put a compass on the horizontal plane and remove fastening of an arrow if it is. The arrow has to point north the blue end. Take the prepared steel subject and having established opposite to the end of an arrow which is pointing north conduct it along the case of the device. The arrow has to indicate a steel subject. Having gone a quarter of a turn (on the conditional dial of hours it will be 15 minutes), remove a subject. The arrow has to come to initial situation, that is point north.

2. Before calculation of an azimuth surely check whether is not present around a compass of objects from iron, conductors with current or permanent magnets, it can negatively affect measurements. After that decide on the price of division of a scale of a compass which measures degree by which the arrow turns. Take two near digital values and divide their difference into the number of divisions between them.

3. Establish a compass horizontally and remove the limiter from an arrow. After several fluctuations, the blue end of an arrow has to point north. Establish a compass scale so that its index of the North coincided with the direction of an arrow. This point corresponds to a zero azimuth.

4. After that it is possible to be guided by areas. Put in the direction of an object on which orientation a thin and oblong subject is made. It can be a branch, a ruler, a splinter, a match, etc. The only restriction – the subject should not be iron or is made of any alloy of this metal, otherwise the arrow just will begin to show on this subject, complicating calculation of an azimuth.

5. Calculate a corner between the direction on an object and the direction on the North. For this purpose count the number of divisions between them and increase this number by the price of division of a scale.
