How to call the planet

How to call the planet

Knowledge Base Hits: 109

Planets are real and invented. It is possible to call the invented planet somehow, but, at least for the sake of illusion of reliability, it makes sense to follow the rules adopted in astronomy for a name of celestial bodies.

Instruction

1. General rules for names of planets following: (a) no more than 16 letters long, (b) preferably – in a word, (c) which can be said in any language, and (d) at the same time without having offended anybody.

2. By the rules adopted by the International Astronomical Union, views of planets as celestial bodies the following: (a) The planet (the celestial body orbiting round a star roundish owing to own gravitation, but insufficiently massive to start thermonuclear reaction, and managed to clean vicinities of the orbit from protoplanetary objects). (b) The dwarf planet (which is not predominating in the orbit unlike the planet). It is "mesoplanet" (A. Azimov's term for planets less Mercury, but is more than the minor planet Ceres). (c) The minor planet (it "a small object of the Solar system", it – "asteroid", "satellite" or "planetoid").

3. Own name is given to the planet: (a) By the name of stars around which addresses, with addition of serial number, in the direction from a star. For example, Sun-3 (our Earth). Or Fomalgaut-26 (invented right now a name). For the minor planet – the satellite the name of "the parental planet" with serial number, for example, of Long = Earth of I can be used). (b) By name mythological character (deities and heroes of the Greek, Roman, Scandinavian and other myths, legends). For example, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Torahs, Kvavar, etc. (c) On a name or a surname of really living or living person. As one of amusing examples such the minor planet Matilda called in honor of the wife of the vice-director of the Parisian observatory serves. (c) By name literary character. So, for example, the whole group of minor planets (satellites of Uranium) are called by the names of characters of tragedies of Shakespeare, and in the Big belt of asteroids there is a minor planet called by the name of the hobbit Bilbo, well-known on Earth. (d) By the name of a research mission or the project which discovered the planet. Here, as a rule reductions and acronyms are used. So, for example the group of planets outside the Solar system was called COROT (from COnvection ROtation and planetary Transits, the joint project of evpropeysky and French space agencies).
