Probably, everyone knows that a century in which we live – the twenty first. But sometimes it is necessary to call correctly a century bygone or, on the contrary, not come. Such requirement can arise by preparation of the report on history or, for example, the composition of the fantastic story. How it is correct to define a century?

1. When determining serial number of a century there can be two complexities. The first – it is accepted to designate a century by the Roman figures, but not everyone is able to do their that's right! to read. The following plate of compliance of signs in the Roman record of number to the Arab tsmfra will help to deal with the Roman figures: X – 10V – 5I - 1
2. Farther everything simply: we put all dozens (X) and the five (V), we add the edinichka located at the end of record of number, we take away the edinichka located in other place. For example: XIX – ten two and one edinichka not at the end of record, i.e. 10 + 10 – 1 = 19 – designation of the nineteenth century; XIV – ten one, the five one and one edinichka not at the end of record, i.e. 10 + 5 – 1 = 14 – designation of the fourteenth century; XVII – ten one, the five one and two edinichka at the end of record, i.e. 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 17 – designation of the seventeenth century.
3. The second moment which should be remembered when determining a century that in the Arab record of number the last two figures numbers of year, and previous - number of a century, but number of century is one unit more than the designating number. Example: 1932 – number of a century designate figure 19, therefore, the twentieth century; 345 – number of a century 3, therefore, century the fourth.
