The arc category is a special case of electric discharge. It has a number of the properties distinguishing it from other types. Such category can arise both on constant, and on alternating current. In the second case it is followed by a sound.

Instruction
1. Study distinctive properties of the arc category. First, it is continuous. Secondly, it burns with an atmospheric pressure, or with a pressure exceeding atmospheric. Thirdly, it has the form of the shining cord which middle rises under the influence of heating up. For this reason the channel of the category takes the arch form in this connection, it also is called arc. At big intensity the category heats electrodes and thermionic issue begins. Then voltage drop between electrodes decreases. The arc category always has negative dynamic resistance and demands restriction of current.
2. Collect tension converter on the basis of the television lower case transformer. Choose the scheme of the converter depending on type of the transformer which is available for you. The transformer choose such that it had no built-in rectifier (so-called TDKS will not approach). Power of the converter should not exceed several watts. Do not connect any rectifiers or multipliers to its exit at all. Idling the converter has to develop tension in several kilovolt.
3. Take two usual nails. Well fix them on the nonflammable dielectric basis so that the distance between their edges made several millimeters. Connect them to the switched-off converter.
4. Turn on the converter. Between electrodes the arch will be lit. You make experiment in the aired room as at the category ozone is emitted. Do not concern electrodes and output chains of the converter, do not try to bring fingers and conducting objects in an arch.
5. Try to bring a match of a usual paraffin candle in an arch. If power is rather high, it will light up.
6. Do not do experiments long as the arch creates noticeable radio interferences. Right after the end of experience switch off the converter and extinguish the candle lit from an arch.
