How to receive iron oxide

How to receive iron oxide

Knowledge Base Hits: 65

Oxides of iron are products of compound of iron with oxygen. Several oxides of iron - to FeO are most widely known, to Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Each of them can be received by means of a number of chemical reactions.

It is required to you

Instruction

1. Oxide of iron (III) Fe2O3 represents the orange-red powder which is formed at oxidation of iron on air. It can be received, decomposing salts of trivalent iron on air at high temperature. Fill in a porcelain crucible a little sulfate or nitrate of iron and calcinate it on fire of the gas burner. At thermal decomposition, sulfate of iron breaks up to oxide of iron and oxide of sulfur, and iron nitrate - to iron oxide, oxygen, water and nitrogen oxide.

2. Fe3O4 receive iron oxide (II, III), burning powdery iron in oxygen or on air. To receive this oxide, fill in a porcelain crucible of a little thin iron powder mixed with nitrate of sodium or potassium. Set fire to mix the gas burner. When heating, nitrates of potassium and sodium decay with release of oxygen. Iron in oxygen burns with formation of Fe3O4 oxide. When burning ends, this oxide will remain at the bottom of a porcelain cup in the form of iron scale.

3. Oxide of iron (II) FeO is received decomposition of a carbonate of iron without air access. Place a small amount of this salt in a test tube from fire-resistant glass and calcinate it on fire of the gas burner. The carbonate of iron will decay on FeO and carbon dioxide.

4. There is an easy way of receiving Fe2O3 oxide from iron, copper vitriol, alkali and bleach. Dissolve in water copper vitriol (copper sulfate) at the rate of 200 grams of salt on water liter.

5. Pour the prepared saturated solution of copper vitriol in plastic capacity and put in it iron nails, nuts, etc. Reaction as a result of which on iron objects copper will be emitted will begin, and they will begin to be dissolved - iron from them will pass into solution in the form of sulfate.

6. In a day color of solution will change from blue to blue-green, and nails will almost completely be dissolved. Merge and filter solution through several layers of filter paper.

7. To the received solution of sulfate of iron flow solution of potassium hydroxide or sodium. You will notice how the black deposit of hydroxide of bivalent iron was formed. Flow solution of chloric bleach in the container with solution. Bleach - strong oxidizer will also oxidize iron hydroxide to Fe2O3 which will settle on day of capacity in the form of orange-red powder.
