The production technology of high-strength fibers received in the sixties the last century has broad application to this day. The trademark which is engaged in this production received the name Kevlar.
Kevlar and its properties
Kevlar belongs to aramids – fibers of high thermal and mechanical durability. Scientific name of this fiber poliparafenilen-tereftalamid. Kevlar DuPont is produced. Kevlar has very high durability. It is almost five times stronger than steel.
Durability and elasticity of kevlar remains at rather low temperatures to - 196 wasps. At low temperature impact, kevlar even becomes stronger.
Kevlar when heating does not melt. It begins to collapse at temperatures 430-480os. Speed of destruction depends on temperature and duration of temperature influence. These parameters are very impressive. If temperature of 150 wasps, then in 500 hours durability of kevlar decreases only by 10-15%. However it easily collapses at long influence of ultraviolet therefore you should not subject it for long time to influence of direct sunshine. Also kevlar loses the durability when soaking. Kevlar perfectly bears blows and resists to distribution of cracks. At high loadings kevlar fibers cave in and form dents. On a design he reminds fiber glass fabric, but does not demand processing.
Use of kevlar
Thanks to the properties, kevlar received wide circulation and application, despite its high cost. Its use when reinforcing car tires was initial purpose of kevlar fibers. In this area it is successfully applied to this day. Also it reinforce loudspeakers and fibers of copper cables. At production of the mixed fabrics, kevlar is used also as a component for reinforcing. Make protective gloves, puncture-proof insoles, protective parts of the clothes intended for extreme sport, for example, in regimentals of motorcyclists of these fabrics. High durability of kevlar allows to apply it to production of bullet-proof vests and helmets. This use of kevlar became, perhaps, the most popular. Kevlar means of protection rather easy, they have a huge speed of absorption of energy. Bullet-proof vests from kevlar passed the majority of tests. To exclude deterioration of means of protection, for them waterproof coverings which also protected from influence of the sun became. Kevlar is applied at production of unmanned aerial vehicles to strengthen their protection and also is selective in shipbuilding where it is possible technologically.
