Two decades ago only planets of the Solar system were known to mankind. But thanks to emergence of orbital telescopes the science took a huge step forward, having discovered thousands of new planets in a visible part of the Universe.

1. Search of new planets is for astronomers and for mankind in general, not simply an issue of knowledge of the world. People do not give up hope to find other civilizations in the Universe, and the last researches considerably strengthened confidence that the mankind is not lonely.
2. The solar system is a part of the galaxy the Milky Way. When you see the Milky Way in the sky, it is necessary to understand that it and is our galaxy. It has the disk form, the Solar system is almost on its outskirts.
3. Our star system includes nine planets, as arrangement from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, goes further Earth, then Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranium, the Neptune and Pluto. The first four planets are considered as internal planets of our star system, the others – external.
4. Scientists call the planets which are out of our Solar system exoplanets. Thanks to the orbital telescopes allowing to investigate the star sky with very high resolution, today astronomers could find in our galaxy more than 700 only the confirmed planets! And taking into account planets whose existence still should be confirmed, their number passes for 1000!
5. Scientists try to study characteristics of the found planets. Most of them are of little use for life, but is also such which in many respects remind Earth. Probability that on some of them there is life is rather high. At the same time it is necessary to consider that in our galaxy more than 50 billion stars – it is even difficult to present such quantity. At the same time about 20 billion from them can have planets. Scientists drew such conclusion on the basis of researches of the orbital Kepler telescope - planets were found in 44% of the stars investigated by it. Considering total number of stars in our galaxy, it becomes clear that the planets found at the moment are only a tiny part from their real quantity.
6. It is very difficult to find planets in other galaxies in view of their remoteness. Nevertheless, scientists are already sure that the number of planets in other galaxies is estimated in billions. Says total number of galaxies in the Universe about it – according to the estimates of astronomers, their more than hundred billion. And in each of them ‒ hundreds of millions of stars. Therefore the total number of planets in the Universe is represented really huge.
7. Today scientists with rather big confidence speak about opening of several planets in other galaxies. It is impossible to see them in the telescope, so remote planets manage to be calculated on the basis of the effect of a gravitational mikrolinzirovaniye which had by them. Existence of the planet causes gravitational distortions of light that manages to be recorded by means of sensitive devices.
8. In 2013 the Kepler telescope failed. Nevertheless, on the basis of the data which are already transferred to them the scientists continue to discover all new and new planets also now.
