Origin of a phraseological unit "Augean stables"

In Ancient Greek mythology Augeas is a tsar epeev in the field of Elid in a northwest part of the peninsula of Peloponnese. God of the sun Helios and Girmina (according to other version, Navsidama) were his parents, according to the legend. Augeas became famous to all Hellas thanks to the rich herds of bulls and goats inherited from the father. They were held on the farmyard, in stables. It were magic animals: three hundred bulls with snow-white wool standing, two hundred red bulls, twelve purely white and one sparkling, as if a star.

The exact number of the heads in herd was probably unknown them about three thousand.

Despite their magic origin, animals had quite terrestrial physiology, and gradually stables were filled with waste of their activity. But nobody was engaged in cleaning of the farmyard, and for several years in stables such amount of manure collected that they turned into fetid, incredibly dirty and terrible place. The view of these stables frightened off all people, and nobody was ready to be accepted to their cleaning which could take years.

Only Heracles, Zeus's son, undertook this business which without exaggeration was called a feat. For this work Augeas promised the hero the tenth part of the herd, but set an impracticable condition – to clean stables in only one day. The tsar was sure that nobody is capable to get along with this case, but Heracles accepted the offer. The royal son Filey watched performance of the contract and confirmed that the hero executed the part of a promise. Zeus's son took aside beds of the Peney and Alfey Rivers, destroyed walls of stables and carried out the canal to which water rushed and per day carried away all manure through the farmyard. Augeas was angry and did not wish to give bulls to an award, and expelled the son who spoke out in defense of the hero together with Heracles from the country. This feat became the sixth in the list of twelve The Labours of Hercules.

Later Heracles revenged Augeas: brought together army, gave up it war, captured Elida and killed the tsar with an arrow.
