How to assign the network address

How to assign the network address

In order that computers successfully worked in network, whether it be a local area network or the Internet, it is necessary to configure network settings correctly. Settings can be made manually, however it is much more convenient and more reliable to entrust it to special means of Windows.

Instruction

1. The DCHP protocol is drafted for networks with TCP/IP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol — "Protocol of a Dynamic Configuration of a Node"). He assigns the addresses IP, DNS and WINS to computers which are in this network segment. On the server the network version of Windows – NT should be installed. Through the Start menu ("Start-up") come into Control Panel ("Control panel") and doubleclick activate the option Network. ("Network"). Select the option Services ("Services") and click Add ("Add"). Find Microsoft DHCP Server in the list of services and confirm the choice, having clicked OK. Confirm reset of the server.

2. In the Administrative Tools group ("Means of the administrator") start DHCP Manager ("Management"). In the main menu select items of Scope ("Range") and Create ("Create"). In the Start Address and End Address fields specify the first and last IP addresses of address range of a subnet and Subnet – a subnet mask. In the Excluded Addresses window ("Exclude") enter the addresses which should not be assigned – for example, of IP printers which do not support DCHP.

3. Set leasing term in the section Lease Duration in Limited To window. This protocol distributes the addresses to computers in network for a while which is defined by the network administrator. It is possible to assign IP for unlimited use, however at the same time complications are not excluded: if to delete the computer from network, the network address assigned to it cannot be transferred to other user. After a half of term of leasing ("rent") of the network address the client of DCHP sends request for its recovery. If the response is not received, the repeated request is sent after a half of the remained term, then once again and so on.

4. Confirm the choice, having clicked OK. After closing of a dialog box you can activate address range at once or at first determine all ranges of your network, and then activate everything at the same time. To the right of the activated ranges the image of the yellow shining lamp will appear. On the client of DCHP (computer at which the user works) it is necessary to specify that IP will be received automatically.

5. If there is a need to set the IP address manually, on the client computer via "Control panel" come into the Network Connections folder. Click the right mouse button for a call of a context menu on an icon of network connection and select the option "Properties". Note "the Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties". Activate "Use the following IP address" and fill fields in the sections intended for definition of the IP address and DNS servers.
