How to write the good children's book

The book begins with the idea

Do not despair if ""everything was written to you"". Just dispel the idea and change a plot a little. Here you were going to write about a dog from a shelter who found the new house? Great! Think up a certain distinctive feature for a dog. Describe the events eyes of a dog, but not the child. You wanted to write about friendship of a dragon and the princess. But just the same history just caught sight to you? Replace a dragon with a dinosaur, and the princess on the ordinary girl living in the city apartment. Play with a plot. Perhaps, at the end of readers not absolutely usual outcome or a surprise waits.

Who are you, the main character?

Think over shape of the main character. Do you know what characters are remembered to children most of all? Unlike others. Ridiculous. Strange. They can have amusing habits. Or speech manner. Only do not forget - the main character has to be living. Similar to ordinary children. 

There is a small questionnaire which will help to work an image of the main character or heroine. 

1.   What is wanted by the main character?

3.   He is an extrovert or the introvert?

4.   What does it differ from other children in?

5.   Whether he doubts himself or it is too self-confident?

6.   Does it have pets? (If it is about the pet whether he has owners?)

7.   What makes your main character happy?

8.   Does it have secrets?

9.   What can it surprise all surrounding with?

10. What it he loves that others hate. Boiled fish, for example. I joke.

If you answered at least 8 of 10 questions, congratulate yourself. Your hero looks living.

When volume matters

It is very important to decide on book volume. And it is for this purpose important to know on what age future work is calculated.

1.   Children up to 3 years prefer as much as possible bright illustrations. If the book is designed for toddler, in it there is enough 200 words.

2.   If you write for children of 2-5 years, be limited to 500 words.

3.   For kids of 3-7 years 800 words there are enough.

4.   Colourful books up to 1,000 words perfectly will be suitable for children of younger school age.

5.   For school students of 5-10 years the volume of words can reach 10,000. In such book there can be heads.

6.   And from 7 to 12 years the maximum volume of the literary work should not exceed 30,000 words.

You remember, ""to speak"" in a circumlocutory manner - a bad invention. Especially, if it is about the children's book.

You hurry to be in time and be not afraid to puzzle

You have an idea and a unique plot. There is a main character. You know approximate volume. Time to start. It is necessary to do it quickly. The plot has to develop, but not be dragged, otherwise the reader will quickly lose interest. If you write about a campaign to the forest, then it is necessary to go on the first two pages there. Long introductions and biographies are not necessary. The reader will not master the boring introduction, will put the work aside and will forget about it.

Surely puzzle the hero. You have to set to him a problem which will take and will absorb it. The hero surely has to overcome some difficulty. He has to make not too easily. Otherwise the book will be uninteresting. Let he will try and the task will fail, will make a mistake. Will despair and, of course, will find a way out.

Barriers have to follow ways of your hero. Not one and not several. If he decided to win against a dragon or to go to a round-the-world travel, then has to get a sword and a chain armor or to construct the ship. And mom will call him by a lunch or will remind that it is time to do homework. Because it is impossible to go on a dragon with outstanding lessons.

Your hero has to like a problem. It has to be the question of exclusive importance. Until this feeling is broadcast by your hero from pages of the book, the reader will feel most too. He will be absorbed by a task. Will support the hero. To worry together with him.

Some nuances

Use repetitions. Because it is pleasant to children. Repeat phrases and words. Enclose them in lips of the main character. Let them define him. You remember - the highlight of the children's work is not only story, but also illustrations to it. Take care that to illustrators was with what to work. The illustrator will have more opportunity to show imagination if the main action happens out of the closed space. For example, in the forest, but not houses and not at school. 

You developed the idea, invested it with words, managed to carry away the reader. Time to finish the book came. On an ending at you is to steam of pages. It is no more. Because the task is solved, tension fell down, there is no need to keep attention of the reader more. It is necessary to take care of aftertaste.

How do call you, the book?

You will think up the title of the book after finish it. Because the rare author imagines to within a letter as the plot and even as the main character will behave will develop. What if instead of ice cream, it wants to it cotton candy, and will the course of history exchange? Never you hurry with the name.

It is better to use in the title of the book of a word on the same letter or verbs of action. The idea to write how the boy or the girl went to circus came to your mind and found there a little chicken who was a baby bird of an ostrich? Do not write in the name ""Visit of Circus"". It's boring. Write better ""A chicken in circus"". Do you want to describe a campaign to the forest for mushrooms? Do not write ""As we mushroomed"". Write ""As Masha won against a fly agaric"". Here to you both alliteration, and an action verb which introduces an intrigue. And how won?

Cope on the Internet, but whether there is no such title of the children's book already. Right at the end check your invention on children and adults. Pay special attention to children. The child is intrigued when hears the name of the work or it is frankly boring for it?

At the end you will need only to re-read and reduce the narration attentively. Arm with the Delete key and be once again run in the text. Wonder: ""And if I remove this word or this phrase, history will lose the meaning?"". If does not lose - safely delete.
