How to define meters

How to define meters

Dactyl, amphibrach, trochee – how not to get confused in all these terms difficult to pronounce? But everything is not as terrible as it seems. The simple algorithm of definition of a meter will allow you to find in 5 seconds of pirrikhiya and to distinguish an iamb.

Instruction

1. For a start it is necessary to remember that foot is a group of syllables on one of which the accent falls.

2. Depending on quantity of syllables in foot allocate the disyllabic, trisyllabic, tetrasyllabic, pentasyllabic sizes. The most known and often met are a disyllabic iamb and a trochee and also a trisyllabic dactyl, an anapaest and an amphibrach.

3. To determine the poem size, divide words in line into syllables. And then mark what of them are percussions. Usually on the scheme the syllables designate by hyphens over one of which the accent is put: __.

4. Having divided thus lines, look on what syllable in foot the accent falls. If the accent on the first syllable from two syllables in foot, then before you a trochee, its scheme looks approximately as follows: _ __ _.

5. If the accent costs on every second syllable, then it is an iamb: __ __.

6. In case of a dactyl in foot there will be three syllables, the first of them – shock: _ _ __ _ _.

7. The following trisyllabic size – an anapaest, with the third shock syllable _ __ _ __.

8. And, at last, the amphibrach - differs in the second shock syllable in trisyllabic foot: __ _ __ _.

9. The quantity of feet in line can be various. The two-foot sizes are shown in the schemes given above, that is in every line the identical groups of shock and unaccented syllables meet twice. There can be also sizes four-, five-, ten-foot (etc).

10. Difficulties when determining a meter can arise at the admission of shock syllables. However they do not influence a type of the size. So, in disyllabic sizes (iamb and a trochee) can appear pirrikhiya – the admission of an accent on rhythmic strong place, i.e. two unaccented syllables in a row. The admission of an accent on the first syllable in trisyllabic sizes is called tribrakhiya.
