Instruction
1. The crossbow consists of three parts. It is a bed, an arch and the trigger mechanism, it is the lock. Begin production of a crossbow of the most ancient design with an arch. Parameters of other parts depend on it. Choose boards. The ash-tree, a yew, a hazel grove, a rowan will be suitable for an arch. Coniferous breeds are no good. The board needs to be dried and sustained well. On does not owe a svilevatost, kososloya and knots. Cut off a piece 70-80 cm long, 3-4 cm wide and about 2 cm thick. Process it a plane so that the arch utonchatsya evenly by the ends up to the width of 1-1.5 cm.
2. Make a bed. It is made of wood of the deciduous breeds having sufficient hardness. It can be the maple, a birch, a beech and even an oak. Keep in mind that the crossbow when firing did not nestle on a shoulder and had no butt. Therefore make a bed in the form of a board which is convenient for holding in hand. In a front part of a bed make a groove which the central part of an arch has to enter.
3. At distance of 8-10 cm from a groove make an opening for rope fastening of an arch. Temporarily fix by means of a rope an arch in a groove, having wound a rope around an arch and passing it throughout a bed opening. Fix a bowstring on the ends of soul. For this purpose on it it is necessary to make small cuts a knife. Pull a bowstring as you will pull it during firing (as far as your force and durability of an arch allows you). Make a mark in a bed in that place where at this moment the delayed bowstring is located. Remove an arch from a bed and continue its processing. Recede from a mark of a bowstring on the distance equal to length of your forearm. Saw off preparation.
4. Make the trigger mechanism. In this design you can apply the most ancient castle of so-called pin type. Drill a through opening in a bed on the place of a mark of a bowstring. In the top part of a bed make cross deepening on bowstring depth. Fix the lever on the hinge according to the drawing in the lower part. The lever axis can be also executed from a tree and is recorded by means of two pieces of a wire passing through it. Insert an axis into a bed, having fixed by that the lever. Record it, having pierced from two parties pieces of a wire. Openings under a wire can be drilled or burned. The last way more corresponds to historical technology. Wrap up the acting small ends of a wire around an axis.
5. Put together a bed and the lever. Record them in this situation the clamp or a rope and, using already ready opening in a bed, drill in the lever deaf deepening on depth of 1.5-2 cm. Remove the clamp. Check, the lever how freely goes to axes. Friction has to be minimum.
6. By means of a knife cut out the round pin from an oak or a beech so that on diameter it was slightly less opening of the lock. The pin has to freely, to enter without friction and hooks an opening, leaning on the trigger lever. Length of the pin has to be such that at full raising of the lever the upper edge was level with or is slightly higher than the top plane of a bed. Function of the pin is to push out a bowstring from a groove.
7. Make a trench for a bolt (arrow). Cut through it from a front edge of a bed to the top opening of the lock. Depth of a trench should not exceed quarters of diameter of a bolt.
8. Carry out final processing of wooden details. Polish them by means of an emery paper. It is possible to cover them with albumin varnish (the egg white dissolved in water) or to navoshchit.
9. By means of a rope fix an arch on a bed. Check correctness of operation of the lock. At a lever deviation up the pin has to push out a bowstring surely.
