British cat: standards of breed

The British cat called also British short-haired, this quite large animal with independent character. The breed has a number of characteristic features which are described in the standard.

1. The size of the British cat varies from large to an average. At this breed the sexual dimorphism is pronounced, i.e. a female there are much less males and are more gracefully put. In general, for British cats it is characteristic a stocky shirokokostny body with well developed muscles. At this breed a short direct back, a broad chest, massive shoulders and hips, short and thick legs. Paws roundish and dense with well developed claws. The tail differs in the average length and the brawny basis.

2. Head of the British cats round with large cheeks of rounded shape. Short and brawny neck. The round forehead is characteristic of this breed that especially is well noticeable in a profile. The forehead smoothly passes into a wide, straight and short nose. The small rounded-off ears are put low and widely.

3. Eyes at these cats big, round, open. They are widely placed. Color of eyes usually varies from citreous to golden-brown. Most often the British cats meet bright orange eyes. Cats of light colors can have blue, emerald-green or lavender eyes. It is not defect.

4. Hair of the British cats is one of bright external distinctive signs of this breed. The healthy animal has to have dense fur, dense and brilliant. Wool is characterized by thin structure and a dense underfur. Externally such fur is similar to a velvet. Too skintight to a body or too long wool is the disqualifying shortcoming.

5. There is a set of colors of the British short-haired cats. From them the most popular – continuous: gray-blue, chocolate, black and lilac. The typical British cat is a gray-blue animal with amber-orange eyes. Also the tabba color with a striped, marble or spotty pattern is widespread among this breed. On a forehead at a color of a tabba there has to be a characteristic spot in the form of letter "M", and from external corners of eyes there have to be dark lines. On a back three parallel strips divided by primary color are located.

6. Meet less often, but tortoise, two-color and smoky British cats and also animals with the wool painted on Siamese type are recognized as the standard of breed. Two-color cats, or bikolor, are characterized by a combination of primary color to white.

7. At the British cats independent and proud temper. They well transfer loneliness and do not love excessive attention from owners. Despite the seeming massiveness and slowness, these cats well run and jump. In rural areas they can prove as excellent mice and rats hunters.
