Why whales are silent

Why whales are silent

For predatory species of whales who hunt mammals, silence – gold they catch production in complete darkness, listening to voices and movements of marine animals. Falcated ducks who begin to say sounds only after successful hunting are that, for example.

Not all whales are able to be silentThis kind of whales lives in oceanic waters near southeast Alaska and hunts generally sea pigs and seals. Whales murderers come for hunting by packs and can destroy other whales and sharks. They fairly deserved reputation of "old salts". They can be divided into two main groups: those who hunt for a salmon, and that whose production are marine mammals.

These are two absolutely different species of whales. The whales eating fish make sounds, click and give each other signals that by means of echolocation to find food. Fishes are not capable to distinguish sounds of echolocation and do not hear hunters.

But mammals hunters most often are silent. The fact is that animals which they track down perfectly perceive sounds by means of which whales communicate.

If falcated ducks clicked all the time as other species of whales, their production would hear and distinguished these sounds as a signal of danger and managed to hide.

In impenetrable oceanic water without echolocation to be guided very difficult. Therefore huge hunters are forced to gather in packs, to overhear and find production aurally.

Usually males of seals make loud sounds when try to attract a female. On these sounds the whales murderers easily and quickly distinguish location of mammals.

When they attack animals, those usually are too large to cope with them alone. Only at this moment the falcated duck calls to the aid other whale. Then one whale holds the caught production, and the second torments it.

Why the person does not hear whalesHuman hearing is not adapted for distinction of sounds under water. Therefore to people whales often seem silent beings. But these underwater beings "are very talkative". Representatives of family of whale communicate among themselves with the help of various sounds. They publish clicks, shout and give signals to echolocation. That the person could hear these sounds, he needs the special device – the hydrophone. This adaptation works by the same principle that an ear of a dolphin, perceiving underwater sounds as vibrations. Then these signals by means of an electric signal will be transformed and become heard via earphones. The most known type of the singing whales – gorbach which lives along the majority of oceanic coasts. At the same time only males sing, and females are silent. Belugas are often called sea canaries for the same reason. Blue whales give sounds which are heard on very long distances, they can be heard on thousands of kilometers. Killer whales and grinda publish high-frequency trills and whistle. Representatives of family of whale use any given sounds for various purposes: for involvement of the soulmate, a research of the territory, navigation of distant action, hunting.
