Who thought up the Internet?

The Internet became an irreplaceable part of our life. In only 5 years the Internet or as we still call it, the World wide web or Global network became popular among millions of people. Now many of us do not represent life without this ingenious invention. And whether you thought sometime of the one to whom we are grateful for so interesting and useful thing? Who thought up the Internet? Who is a founder of Global network? And in general, why initially thought up the Internet?

Here is how everything began …

In 1957 the U.S. Department of Defense for the first time thought of reliable information transfer. It was necessary to create such system of transmission of messages that even in case of nuclear war this system did not glitch. The American agency of research defense projects had an idea to use computers as sources of reception and information transfer. And for this purpose it was necessary to develop computer network. Charged to realize the idea to four universities of the USA: To the University of California, Los Angeles, Utah State University, the university in Santa Barbara and to the Stanford research center.

And in 1969 the talented group of scientists created the computer network under the name ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) which united these 4 universities.

By 1973 the ARPANET network became international. By means of a transatlantic telephone cable the organizations from Norway and Great Britain were connected to network. By the end of the 70th years began to work on standardization of protocols of data which were successfully standardized in 1982-1983 years actively.

Active part in development of network protocols was taken by John Postel. As John Postel is the author of many network protocols which are used to this day: IP, ICMP, TCP, FTP, DNS, many call him the person who created the Internet or the father of the Internet.

By the beginning of 1983 after the ARPANET network passed to just created protocol of merging of TCP/IP networks, the name which we now successfully use Internet also was assigned to it.

All this time the computer network was available to limited number of people. And only in 1991, after standardization of the WWW pages (World Wide Web), the World wide web becomes the public invention of the United States.

So in what year created the Internet?

As you understand in what year you thought up the Internet it is impossible to answer unambiguously. Because a concept Internet and our modern Worldwide network appeared much later, than the idea of creation and her predecessor, ARPANET network. But these questions can be united such question: who and when thought up and created the first Internet? In 1957 the idea came to mind to experts from DARPA (agency of defense research projects of the USA) and 12 years later group of talented university scientists created the first computer network ARPANET. And in what year created our modern Internet, you can define for yourself – in 1983 when there was a concept Internet or in 1991 when the network became public property.

In conclusion it is possible to tell that it is impossible to allocate the one and only person from a circle of people who worked on creation of the Worldwide computer network and thought up the Internet. The mankind went to this opening gradually, still Nikola Tesla in 1908 speaking about the ideas of application of electric information communication, predicted emergence of Global network: When the project will be complete, the businessman in New York will be able to dictate instructions, and they will immediately appear at its office in London …. In the same way any image, a symbol, the drawing, the text can be transferred from one place to another... And the most important that all this will be transferred without wires …
