If the Internet at you not unlimited, but that is the home phone number, it is possible to transfer files in city boundaries with a small speed and is free. For this purpose normal analog modems will be required.
Instruction
1. Buy analog modems (devices of the standards ADSL, 3G, WiMax, etc. are no good). Do not acquire so-called software modems, assigning signal processing to the computer CPU at all. New analog modems can be very expensive therefore look for the devices which were in the use at online auctions. Modems should be equipped with the interfaces which are available for your computer.
2. Connect modems to the computer on each of the ends of the communication line. Connect them directly to a telephone line (without ADSL splitter). If splitters are, connect analog modems parallel to phones, but not ADSL modems.
3. On each of machines start the program intended for terminal emulation. In Linux it is Minicom, in DOS - the built-in terminal emulator of the DOS Navgator program, in Windows - Hyper Terminal. If on two computers different terminal programs are used, make sure that they support the same file transfer protocol, for example, of ZMODEM.
4. Select identical parameters of transfer in terminal programs: speed, number of bits, control of parity. Call one modem on another: ATDP of a nomer_telefon. If it was not succeeded to call, alter this command thus: ATDT P of a nomer_telefon (between letter P (Latin) and the phone number of spaces should not be).
5. Type the text on the keyboard of one machine and make sure that it immediately appears on the screen another. Make sure that data can be transferred thus in both directions.
6. On one machine include a file receive mode under the ZMODEM protocol or similar. On another start transfer of the file under the same protocol. When the file is accepted, save it. Remember that the analog modem, unlike the modern device of the ADSL standard, at data transmission does a subscriber line busy. It does not influence operation of the available ADSL modems in any way.
