How to check the pulse transformer

The pulse transformer, unlike normal, is incapable to work in continuous duty. It develops rather powerful impulses which duration is much less than duration of pauses between them. The average power disseminated on the transformer is small. In most cases the impulses developed by it are high-voltage, for example, for ignition of discharge in flashlight or mix in engine cylinder.

Instruction

1. Learn from the reference book or from the passport of the transformer of value of input and voltage output. Connect the discharger calculated on tension to secondary winding of the transformer it is about one and a half-two times less than a day off. In air with atmospheric pressure to distance in 1 mm there corresponds puncture voltage about a kilovolt.

2. When checking on the first way take low-voltage energy source with automatic change-over between the modes of voltage stabilization and current. Connect it to the primary winding of the transformer via the button with good isolation. Expose tension approximately ten times less rated for the primary winding, and set restriction of current at the level of 1.5 times less than the transformer, limit for this type. Press the button - nothing will occur, but at its release in the discharger the spark will slip. If at each experience the spark slips only in the discharger, but not in isolation of the transformer, it is serviceable. Remember that at the time of release of the button the high tension arises not only on secondary winding, but also on primary because of self-induction.

3. For check on the second way charge the condenser with a capacity about 0.1 microfarad up to the tension on which the primary winding of the pulse transformer is calculated. Then, without touching current carrying parts with fingers (if necessary using rubber gloves), discharge this condenser on the primary winding of the transformer. The spark in the discharger will slip at once. Determine serviceability of the transformer by the same criterion, as the last way. Then surely completely discharge the condenser.

4. Having checked the transformer, make the decision on its replacement or installation back in product (for example, flashlight). The last has to be deenergized before work, and its condensers - are discharged.
