Slaked lime (hydrate of lime) – inorganic compound. On production it is received by mixture of water with calcium oxide. Slaked lime was widely used at production of such construction materials as cement of plaster, plaster and whitewash.
Receiving
Receive hydrate of lime in vitro by mixing of sodium hydroxide and water solution of chloride of calcium. In mineral form slaked lime contains in some metamorphic, volcanic and deep rocks.
In addition receiving hydrate of lime is possible at coal firing.
Properties
Hydrate of lime – odourless white powder or colourless crystals which break up when heating to 560 degrees to water and oxide of calcium. Index of refraction of hydrate of lime 1.574, acidity (rka) 12.4, water solubility of 0.189 g / 100 ml, density is 2.211 g/cm3, molar weight is 74.093 g/mol.
In alcohol slaked lime is not dissolved.
Application
Lime water is saturated solution of white color of hydrate of lime. Its antiacid properties apply in medical area at treatment of acid burns. Slaked lime is widely applied in the following industries: - for production of stearate of calcium – in chemical industry; - for production of additives to oils – in oil-processing industry; - by production of metals. Gidoksid calcium is added to stream of the processed gas, for acid neutralization; - for improvement of quality of the earth soil – road making; - for storage of vegetables in hangars – production of antimicrobic and anti-fungal preservatives. To mitigation of greenhouse effect and reduction of atmospheric CO2 the hydrate of lime is applied as additive in sea water. Also slaked lime is used as natural alternative of chemicals in fight against bugs, fleas, ticks and their larvae. Quite often in the construction sphere slaked lime is applied to rough-casting of rafters and whitewashing of wooden fences. Thus, materials protect from ignition and rotting. The hydrate of lime also takes part at production of brake linings, hair removal creams, tank mixes, chloric lime, ebonite, etc. In stomatology the special composition of slaked lime is applied as the disinfector to root root canals. In the food industry slaked lime is much applied as E526 nutritional supplement. It is added at production of baby food, fruit juice, power engineering specialists, soft and alcoholic beverages, sugar cane, pastries and flour products, corn flat cakes, sweets and confectionery, food salt, pickles.
