Carrots are one of the most useful vegetables on personal plot. Besides normal way of cultivation of this culture in the summer, many gardeners put it towards the winter. How and when to carry out subwinter crops of carrots?
Carrots are planted towards the winter to receive early harvest of this vegetable at the end of spring – the beginning of summer. The root crops which are grown up in such a way do not suit for long storage, and have to be used for cooking in short terms. Most often such carrots are used for preparation of summer salads and various soups.
Preparation of bed
On personal plot towards the winter start landing of carrots in the middle of October. For this purpose it is necessary to choose the place of crops correctly. The soil has to be easy and fertile. Near bed, melt waters that has not washed away seeds water current should not be late.
At this time begin to prepare bed. It is cleaned from the vegetable remains and pour additional soil that height of bed was not less than 20 cm. Also on perimeter the bed can be fenced with boards or sheet slate to avoid its diffusion. For the winter at the edges of bed establish stakes to know for sure its arrangement under snow layer.
Further on bed introduce necessary fertilizers. For this purpose it is necessary to use on each square meter of the earth 1 tablespoon of superphosphate and sulfate potassium. Or just to apply any complex mineral fertilizers in the same quantity.
To make the soil easier, it is necessary to use the decayed sawdust. They promote its loosening.
Also in October on bed surely cut deep grooves for further crops of carrots towards the winter. They have to be not less than 4-5 cm in depth with interval between them of 20 cm. After that the bed is covered with film that has not washed away groove precipitation.
Landing of carrots towards the winter
Directly start crops of seeds of carrots at the time of emergence of the first steady frosts. Such time usually comes in the middle of November or at the beginning of December. It is impossible to put earlier. During thaw the seeds can sprout and then die. For landing use seeds only of early ripening and mid-season grades.
In grooves display only dry seeds, mixing them with yellow sand. From above powder with dry soil which can be prepared on the personal plot in advance. If by the time of landing the snow has already dropped out, then it is thrown over bed and pressed fir twigs.
In the early spring from bed shovel away part of snow and powder it with peat or humus. It will allow the earth to get warm better that will contribute to earlier and fast development of plants. After full thawing of snow over bed it is possible to establish arches and to pull film.
The subwinter crop of carrots can be reaped at the beginning of June. After that on bed put other early vegetable cultures.
