How to determine capacity

How to determine capacity

Electric capacity of the conductor is practically used in condensers of various types. The most widespread – flat and cylindrical condensers. Measurement of capacity of both the flat, and cylindrical condenser requires a ruler and a caliper. Capacity of any type of the condenser can be measured at connection it to a chain of alternating current.

It is required to you

  • ruler, caliper, the ampermeter and the voltmeter for alternating current.

Instruction

1. Measure the area of one of condenser facing plates by means of a ruler or a caliper. If a facing rectangular, for this purpose increase its length by width. If round, measure diameter which square, then increase by 3.14 and divide into 4. By means of a caliper measure distance between condenser facings. You perform all measurements in meters. Then define dielectric permeability of the environment which is between condenser facings. For air it makes 1, and for other substances is in the special table. For calculation of capacity, increase the area of one facing by dielectric permeability of the environment and divide into distance between condenser facings. Increase the received result by number 8.85*10-12 (10 in-12 degrees). Condenser capacity in Farads will be the answer.

2. Capacity of the cylindrical condenser by means of a caliper find radiuses of the cylinders making facings of condensers. For this purpose measure their diameters and divide into 2. By means of a ruler measure length of facings which is cylinder height. Measure the radius and length in meters. Determine dielectric permeability of the environment between facings by the table. For calculation increase number 6.28 by value of dielectric permeability and length of facings of the condenser. It will be intermediate result. Then find the relation of radius of a bigger cylinder to smaller, and from the received number take a natural logarithm by means of the calculator. Divide intermediate result into the received number and increase by 8.85*10-12(10 in-12 degrees).

3. Condenser capacity in a chain of alternating current Connect the condenser to a source of alternating current with the known frequency. Attach the voltmeter to its facings, and attach the ampermeter consistently and take readings respectively in volts and amperes. Then value of current (ampermeter), consistently divide into values of tension (voltmeter), frequency and number 6.28. As a result we will receive condenser capacity.
