How to express number as a percentage

Generally the percent is the fractional number equal to the one 100-th share of unit. However more often it use something as relative unit of measure of quantity, and then one percent accepts various numerical values. The quantitative measure of some share measured in these units from the general whole has to demonstrate as far as this share is less or more than whole.

Instruction

1. If it is required to express as a percentage some number and in statements of the problem there are no other explanations, so it is about a ratio of percent and decimal fractions. In this case percent are used for comparison of the set number (N) with unit - it is accepted to the size equal to hundred percent. Proceeding from these statements of the problem, work out the equation in which left part there will be a relation of initial number to unknown number of percent (x), and in right - unit relation to hundred percent: N/x = 1/100.

2. Express required size (x) from the worked-out equation: x = N*. Substitute the number set in conditions in the received formula and calculate the percent corresponding to it. For example, if initial number is the decimal fraction 0.74, as a percentage it can be expressed as 0.74*100/1 = 74% of unit. And natural number 3 corresponds 3*100/1 = 300% of unit.

3. However more often in tasks any basic indicator (B) - the number expressing the general whole to which it is necessary to compare the size set in conditions is given. In this case in the proportion made on the first step numerator of fraction of the right part (unit) it is necessary to replace with a basic indicator - to it there has to correspond the share in 100%: N/x = B/100.

4. Express a required variable from equality of the previous step: x = N*. Substitute a basic indicator, the set number in a formula and calculate the percent corresponding to it. For example, if it is necessary to count what percent of day is spent for a semichasovy dream, a basic indicator will be a number of hours in day - to it there correspond hundred percent of daily time. Dream time, according to a formula, is approximately equal in percentage expression 7*100/24 ≈ 29.17%.
