How to find the direction of magnetic field

The direction of magnetic field can be found both experimentally, and in advance having calculated and having defined it theoretically. The complexity of definition depends on a configuration of a source of magnetic field.

It is required to you

  • The textbook in physics, the sheet of paper, a pencil.

Instruction

1. Read in the textbook in physics about what creates magnetic field in surrounding space. The cause of magnetic field explains any given its direction. At the microlevel the magnetic field is created by the microcurrents generated by the movement of electrons around a kernel. When orientation of rotation of electrons becomes identical, substance is magnetized. At the same time each microcurrent has own magnetic field determined by the rule of the right hand or the rule of the gimlet.

2. Draw the solenoid studied in a school course to physics on the sheet of paper. It is known that the solenoid is the coil having a certain magnetic core or with empty filling. The coil is connected to a DC power source. Rings of the coil create own magnetic field. To define the direction of this field, use the rule of the gimlet. This rule says that the direction of magnetic field of the solenoid coincides with the forward direction of the movement of the handle of the gimlet in case the direction of rotation of the handle coincides with the direction of current in the solenoid coil.

3. Remember the rule of the right hand or the rule of the gimlet. It is the basic for definition of the direction of magnetic field in most cases. Any object, as much as difficult on a configuration of magnetic sources, can be broken into more detailed parts which field can be determined by the rule of the gimlet.

4. Write out from the textbook in physics Biot-Savart-Laplace's law. This law allows to count the size and the direction of a vector of magnetic induction in any general case. A basis of calculation of magnetic field by this rule are the currents creating this field. And lengths of sites on which current flows can be done as much as small up to elementary values, increasing thus calculation accuracy.
