How to measure leak current

Current of leak is current of loss of the battery or other power station. There is it because of decrease in insulation resistance of an electrical circuit. And isolation can remain intact. For ensuring normal capacity of the accumulator, it is necessary to reveal, measure and eliminate leak current in time.

Instruction

1. Disconnect everything consumers energyof in the car: the autoradio tape recorder, the alarm system, bulbs in salon, illuminations of doors and a trunk – generally everything that can influence measurements.

2. Take the ampermeter or a multimeter put in the ampermeter mode, establish a measurement scale on division 10 A.

3. Switch-off the "plus" terminal of the accumulator, connect in a rupture of a chain the measuring device that its positive wire went on the battery, and minus – to the contact terminal of your car. Wait about 5 minutes before beginning measurements. Electronics of some cars continues to function after shutdown within several minutes.

4. Turn the ignition key in the provision "0". The measuring device should not show existence of the passing current. At emergence of currents on the device check contact chains of the generator and starter.

5. Turn the ignition key in the provision "parking". The measuring device has to show insignificant currents in a chain up to 0.1 A. If currents exceed this value, check power-supply circuits of additional devices of a car: illumination of salon, lighter, audio system, etc. For this purpose it is necessary to take out serially safety locks from the corresponding devices before disappearance of currents of leak.

6. Install the ignition key in the 1 mode, but do not turn on the engine. The measuring device has to show value of currents within 1-2 A. If values of current considerably exceed this indicator, check all chains of the car, serially disconnecting them, measuring current, verifying with the necessary values which are specified in technical documentation the car.

7. Banal damage of isolation or the oxidized contacts can become the reason of leakage of current. Anyway, first of all, it is necessary to check serviceability of the battery.
