What pronouns belong to relative

Those which indicate certain objects, their signs, a certain quantity belong to the category of relative pronouns in Russian. It "who" "that", "what", "which", "which", "whose", "which" and "how many". They connect a subordinate clause with the main thing and act as connective words.

Instruction

1. You should not confuse relative pronouns with interrogative which are homonyms of the first. For example, in two offers – "all those who sincerely wanted to congratulate the birthday boy came to birthday" and "I write down in the small book how many money I spent in a week" - "who" and "how many" are relative, and in "who will come to our following holiday next year?" and "how many money you managed to spend last month?" are interrogative pronouns.

2. Two of these groups, in general, are similar in grammatical and semantic features and signs, but there are also small features. For example, a pronoun "which" has no Nominative case form in singular of a feminine gender. When this word acts in the offer as a subject, it inclines only as a possesive adjective. In turn, pronouns "which" and "what" can be used in the speech and writing as synonyms: "only with it I had that really strong feeling which I as it seemed to me earlier, forgot for a long time and forever". In others offers "which" can replace a pronoun "that": "the big trade building that was constructed from zero everything a year ago, receives a large number of visitors and guests".

3. In the offer relative pronouns has no certain "purpose" and can act as various sentence parts. Examples: "who cannot be honest in the life, that cannot correctly live", "in the evening on the street was so silent, and was heard what neighbors in the housing estate speak about" and "last year on vacation we had the excellent room which windows came to the sea and the beach".

4. Ordinary some difficulties act in case it is necessary will differentiate the unions and connective words which are expressed by relative pronouns. As a rule, such problems are relevant for "what". If such word is a pronoun, then it has several signs: also points so-called subject correlation to a certain subject owing to what it can be replaced with a noun; on "what" the logical accent falls; the subordinate clause is transformed to interrogative ("we do not know what occurred in that house that day" and "what occurred in that house that day?"); there is a possibility of addition of intensifying particles; it is possible to put a pretext before a pronoun.
