Leningrad is the unsubdued city. Despite all tests which fell to lot of its inhabitants, the city survived and became the Victory symbol. Today some try to hold back that tragic story or to distort it, providing the doubtful facts to change consciousness of modern people. But we should not forget the truth at all, should not belittle values of heroic firmness of besieged Leningrad.

  1. At the end of summer of 1941 the territory of Leningrad was cut off from the world by the German troops. So in revenge they tried to starve the city out, long fights did not give such chance. Though Germans conducted continuous firings of the exhausted city.
  2. Residents of Leningrad were almost forced the most part of time to remain in the shelter. Firings continued several hours as to Germans was instructed to raze the city to the ground. But they did not manage to make it. Moreover, Leningrad residents performed dedicated work on release of military equipment from machines of Kirov Plant, helping the front. As they managed it, in the conditions of long blockade, remains a riddle.
  3. The ration was gradually reduced so inhabitants had to collect literally the last remains to feed children. Values, gold jewelry were exchanged for bread.
  4. Leningrad was saved by Road of Life through an ice path across Ladoga. On it, in the conditions of danger of death, wounded were taken out, and back there was cargo transport with bread and grain. But all the same, there was catastrophically not enough food. Hundreds of people died every day because of hunger and cold. At that time to lose a card on receiving a scanty ration it was equivalent to death.
  5. The Siege of Leningrad lasted nearly three years. The ring was interrupted in January, 1943. Only then the terrifying city life picture in isolation for these years opened. Completely it was succeeded to exempt the city from fascists only in January, 1944.
  6. About 1.5 million people died in intolerable conditions. Bodies of the dead long time lay directly on streets, because of continuous firings they could not be buried normally. Cannibalism cases were recorded.
  7. One more interesting fact about blockade. People survived when soldering bread in 125 grams. The citizens who are cut off from the rest of the world escaped as they could. They cooked structure from glue with bran, tried to do paper, malt, inedible substances flour and objects, fir-trees of pets and pigeons, rats. Many survivors for the rest of life remained then disabled people. The city stood at the cost of hundreds thousands lives.
