The term "subordination" comes from the Latin word Subordinatio – "submission", "obedience". It characterizes the system of the relations, the rules connected with division of people into chiefs and subordinates. In army, police and other militarized structures the order of the chief – the law for the subordinate. It is clear, such structures cannot exist without rigid discipline. And how to keep subordination in civil institutions and whether it is necessary in general?

What main principles of subordination

What do the principles and rules of subordination consist in? It is possible to answer this question, having reviewed the following example. Let's say there is a plant or factory. The immediate superior of the worker is the master who, respectively, the subordinate in relation to the supervising foreman. The supervising foreman submits to the foreman, and that is to the plant manager (factory). Respectively, the director is a chief for all people entering into staff of the enterprise.

If the plant (factory) legally is a part of larger structure – associations, trust, corporations - the director submits to the management of this structure.

The principles of subordination demand that the relations between subordinates and chiefs were based on mutual respect, strict observance of labor discipline and unconditional implementation of lawful orders of the chief. Heads have the right to make the orders obligatory for all ordinary employees and more subordinate heads and also to resort to encouragement and collectings, within the powers. Both encouragement, and collectings have to be fair.

Even if the subordinate was guilty, to inadmissibly humiliate his advantage, to use abusive terms. Such behavior of the chief is incompatible with rules of subordination.

The subordinate is obliged to treat the chief with respect. However, if he does not agree with its actions, orders, he has the right to appeal against them to the higher chief, according to provisions of the Labor code and regulations of the organization.

How to keep subordination in labor collective

Heads of all levels have to combine the valid, attentive attitude towards the subordinates with insistence, and if necessary and with reasonable severity. With subordinates it is necessary to behave politely, but it is not necessary to allow frivolities, familiarity. It has negative effect also on labor discipline, and on moral and psychological climate in collective. Each subordinate has to know and understand accurately that there are limits beyond which it is impossible to go. It belongs also to the relations at the level the worker master, and to the relations among the highest leading staff of the enterprise. Without subordination the collective will not be able effectively to work. Therefore it needs to be supported in every possible way.
