What is the feudal state

The feudal state gradually takes the place of a primitive-communal or slaveholding system. From here and two ways of its emergence. The first way is a gradual disorder of slaveholding and origin on its basis of feudalism. The second – slow decomposition of a primitive system when elders and leaders became owners of land while other tribespeople turned into completely dependent peasants.

Patrimonial leaders acquired the status of kings, the national militia became team or army. As a result, irrespective of a way of development of a feudal system the result was one. On the one hand, large land tenure headed by owners – feudal lords was formed, and with another – the rural community and, being earlier free collapsed, peasants community members became completely dependent on owners of land. The feudal state was so formed. Of course, unlike slaves who were equated to a thing the serfs, though had no land right, were owners of the house, constructions, stock. They used the earth and gave to the landowner the made benefits. It was called a rent. There were three various types of a rent. The first was called corvee when the peasant had to work on the feudal land a certain number of days in a week. The rest of the time he worked on the home field. The second – a natural quitrent, that is the measured quantity of agricultural or craft products which were given to the feudal lord. The peasant could use the remains. And the third – a monetary quitrent, that is subject to transfer to the land owner served a certain sum of money. Quite often all three types of a rent were combined with each other. Besides, there was also a direct compulsion of serfs which encouraged the state by laws. At early stages of development of feudalism active aggressive wars for the neighboring territories which were quite often owned by the same feudal lords were quite often waged. So gradually the strict hierarchical system of submission of weaker by powerful feudal lords was under construction. During blossoming of this system all efforts of the state were bent on fixing of similar way: protection of a private property, transformation into serfs of other people, creation of conditions for exploitation of peasants. In the period of the beginning of disintegration of feudalism the state made all efforts to keep the existing mode. It kept on reaches of serfs who paid huge taxes and were obliged to do military service. Not the last role in maintenance of a feudal system was played by church. Even kings submitted to it. The church and the power actively helped each other.
