How to define a genre

Definition of a genre changed at various times. Now this word it is accepted to call combination of works of art in groups on the general signs or its correlation with other works on the same signs. In each kind of art there are various genres.

1. Literature genres especially popular today: fentaz, fantasy, detective, drama, tragedy, comedy. Fentaz and a fantasy – related genres, the idea, fictional, often impossible for our world, is the cornerstone of a plot. The property to find a logical explanation remoteness in time and space from our time is characteristic of a fantasy (Lem, Lukyanenko, Strugatsky, Efremov, Garrison). The Fentaza (Tolkien, Howard) has no such scientific base, and proceeds from myths and fairy tales therefore existence of many heroes seems illogical for our world.

2. The detective's plot (Doyle, Christie, Stout) is based on the solution of a certain riddle, mystery, as a rule, of crime. The good detective helps to develop logical and analytical thinking.

3. The drama, the tragedy and the comedy – the literary and drama works becoming bases theatrical and musical theater productions. The first genre, the drama (Schiller, Shakespeare) has, as a rule, the plot which is brought closer to life. A conflict source – the hero's disagreement with installations of society. The tragedy (Shakespeare, Pushkin) differs from the drama in more sublime plot and death of the hero in the final. The comedy plot (Beaumarchais, Molière) is based on abundance of jokes and the happy final.
