How to find an azimuth

How to find an azimuth

Being guided by areas in a backpacking, on fishing and just at stay in the unfamiliar area often it is necessary to use not so much knowledge of arrangement of parts of the world how many randomly the chosen reference points. For movement on the set reference points we will need knowledge of what is an azimuth and also as to find it.

It is required to you

  • Compass, reference points on the area

Instruction

1. For a start imagine that you are in the center of the imagined circle divided into 360 parts (degrees) marked with strokes and located a zero mark on the North. If you see that, let us assume, the high dome of orthodox cathedral is in this system of coordinates opposite to a mark with counting 270, it means that the chosen reference point is located in the direction which is defined by the specified counting. The corner expressed in degrees between the direction on the North and the direction on the chosen reference point measured clockwise will also be an azimuth.

2. For definition of an azimuth on the area get up facing the chosen object (reference point). Take a compass, release a brake of a magnetic needle and arrange the device strictly horizontally.

3. When the arrow calms down and will cease to fluctuate, combine zero division of a circular scale of a compass with the direction on the North. You just made orientation of a compass.

4. Now, without forcing down this orientation, turn a device cover that the cut was directed to you, and the front sight was turned precisely towards a reference point. For this purpose just look through a cut at a front sight, having combined "the line of aiming" with a reference point. Counting near a front sight will show value of an azimuth on the chosen object.

5. If you have to solve the return problem, that is on a predetermined magnetic azimuth to find on the area the required direction (it should be done at the movement on azimuths), establish the index at a front sight on the counting equal to a required azimuth and release the brake lever of a magnetic needle.

6. Establish a compass horizontally and focus it the same as when determining an azimuth on an object. Look at the area through a front sight and look for some reference point. The direction from a point of your arrangement on this reference point will correspond to the set azimuth.
