How to receive ethylene

How to receive ethylene

Ethylene is a combustible gas, it possesses a slight smell. Ethylene is used in production of hydrolytic ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol (main part of antifreeze), styrene, polyethylene and many other. Receive it by means of pyrolysis (heating without air access) oil fractions, for example straight-run gasoline, etc. But there are ways of receiving ethylene without use of oil products.

It is required to you

  • Ethyl alcohol, aluminum oxide, sulfuric acid, laboratory glassware.

Instruction

1. From heat resisting material place a little oxide of aluminum in capacity and close it a cover with two exhaust tubes, one of which place in a test tube from the concentrated chamois acid. Heat capacity on the gas burner, temperature of oxide of aluminum has to be approximately, from 350 to 500 degrees.

2. Further, in a separate test tube pour a little pure ethyl alcohol. Close a test tube a stopper with an exhaust tube and heat it on a spirit torch. Connect an exhaust tube to the capacity in which there is an aluminum oxide. When heating, alcohol will begin to evaporate, passing on the gas outlet, will get to the container with aluminum oxide, and at high temperature on oxide of aluminum there will be dehydration, i.e. otshchepleny waters from alcohol molecules. Capacity will come out ethylene with water vapor and not reacted alcohol in gaseous state. This mix will get to a test tube with sulfuric acid which serves for mix dehydration.

3. Mix ethyl alcohol and the concentrated sulfuric acid. There will be a reaction to formation of sour ethyl air. Heat mix, when heating there will be a process of dehydration of alcohol to release of ethylene.
