How to temper metal

How to temper metal

Producers of the cutting, cutting and other metal tool quite often allow flaws in metal training. Often the edge of the axe can be insufficiently tempered or perekaleno. It is almost impossible to check quality of training of the tool at the time of purchase. It is extremely inconvenient to use in work as the tool which is rumpled or breaks. Therefore you can try to temper metal independently.

It is required to you

  • Fire, forge pincers, two containers, lubricating oil, water

Instruction

1. Prepare the place and necessary materials for training of the tool. You need a fire with coals and two containers. Fill one capacity with lubricating oil (motor, diesel, autoscrap). Fill the second capacity with well water. To hold the heated iron, forge pincers will also be necessary for you.

2. Place the tool prepared for training in a fire, on coals The coals, the higher them temperature are more white. Control training process. The surface of metal in the place of hardening has to be brightly crimson, but not white. The fact is that superheated metal can simply "burn down". Track that color on the surface of metal was distributed evenly, on the tempered edge there should not be dark sites.

3. Do not try to temper until white all tool, only the cutting edge is subject to hardening. If color of metal is insufficiently bright (with a bluish shade), then steel will become soft.

4. When the tempered tool some time lay down on coals and "ripened", take it forge pincers and dip into the container with oil. Keep the metal tool in oil 3-4 seconds, take out for several seconds and again sharply lower in the same capacity. Metal has to gain "cyanotic" color. Be careful – oil can flash after you take out the tool from capacity for the first time.

5. Now lower the tool in the container with well water and leave before full cooling. For sharper cooling stir slowly water with the tempered tool.

6. Instead of oil it is possible to use ordinary boiled water. However you remember that repeatedly it is not recommended to repeat the procedure of training of the same tool as metal accumulates "fatigue" and spoils, losing the working properties. After repeated training it will be necessary only to start up a product in melting.
