How to write date in English

Designation of calendar date in different countries differs not only language in which the name of month, but also the format accepted in this country - that is rather is written, in which are specified day, month and year and also the signs used as dividers between them. Besides, there are settled forms of writing of dates differing among themselves used in official documents, fiction, personal correspondence, etc. in the concrete country or group of the countries.

Instruction

1. Specify at first month, then day, then year if it is necessary to write calendar date in Englishto language in the format accepted in North America (USA and Canada). At the same time separate month of day a gap, and before number of year put a comma. For example, date in this format should be specified on October 4, 2011 as October 4, 2011. The end after number of year, as a rule, is not put. It is possible to specify also the termination of ordinal numerals in number of day: October 4th, 2011. Pretexts and a definite article are put only in official documents. It is possible to reduce names of month to the first three letters (for example, instead of January to write Jan). An exception make September which is usually reduced to four letters Sept and August which is designated both by reduction of Aug, and Ag.

2. Use the sequence day - month - year at the indication of date in English in the classical British option accepted in Europe. Other rules do not differ from the North American standard described in the previous step. For example: 4th October, 2011 or 4 Oct, 2011.

3. Do not forget about correctness of writing of the terminations of ordinal numerals - the numbers which are coming to an end on unit have the termination st (for example - 1st, 41st), the two there corresponds the termination nd (2nd, 42nd), to the three - rd (3rd, 43rd), and all the rest - th (4th, 44th).

4. Divide numbers of month, day and year points or slanting hyphens (direct slashes) when writing date in a numerical format. For example: 10.04.2011 or 10/04/2011. There is the same difference between North American and European formats - the same date in the European option will look so: 4.10.2011 or 4/11/2011.
